Tout ce qui jusqu'à présent l'avait porté, ses sentiments, sa fierté, son insouciance, sa joie, tout s'en allait à vau-l'eau, tournoyait sous ses yeux, flétri, terni, pourri, emporté dans un magma de boues et de débris putrescents (CENDRARS, Dan Yack, Plan de l'Aiguille, 1929, p. 174).

Chir., p. 428 ds GDF.), attest. isolée; à nouv. fin XVIIIe s. 1790 (Ann. chim. et phys., t. 7, p. 73). Empr. au lat. putrescens, -entis, part. prés. adj. de putrescere « se gâter, se corrompre », inchoatif de putrere « être pourri », dér. de putris, v. putréfier.
